Creating Portfolios
Portfolios are the top-level containers for your investments in Metrifly. Each portfolio holds its own set of transactions, holdings, performance data, and tax reports. You might create separate portfolios for different strategies, accounts, or family members.
When to Create Multiple Portfolios
Common reasons to use more than one portfolio:
- Separate brokerage accounts -- One portfolio per broker (e.g., "CommSec" and "Interactive Brokers")
- Different strategies -- "Long-term Growth" vs "Dividend Income"
- Family members -- "My Portfolio" vs "Partner's Portfolio"
- Tax entities -- Separate portfolios for personal vs SMSF investments
The number of portfolios you can create depends on your subscription plan. See Plans and Pricing for limits.
Creating a Portfolio
- Navigate to the Portfolios page from the sidebar.
- Click Create Portfolio.
- Fill in the form:
| Field | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Yes | A descriptive name (e.g., "Australian Shares") |
| Description | No | Optional notes about this portfolio's purpose |
| Default Currency | Yes | The base currency for reporting (AUD, USD, GBP, EUR, etc.) |
- Click Create.
Choosing Your Default Currency
The default currency determines how all portfolio values are displayed. If you hold assets in multiple currencies, Metrifly automatically converts them to your default currency using daily exchange rates.
Examples:
- An Australian investor should choose AUD -- even if they hold US shares, all values will be shown in AUD
- A US-based investor should choose USD
- A UK investor should choose GBP
The default currency cannot be changed after a portfolio is created. If you need a different currency, create a new portfolio and re-import your transactions.
After Creation
Once created, your new portfolio is empty. You have several ways to populate it:
- Add transactions manually -- See Adding Transactions
- Import from CSV -- See CSV Import to upload trades from your broker
- Configure settings -- See Portfolio Settings to set your tax entity and allocation method
- Add benchmarks -- See Benchmarks to compare your performance against market indices
Switching Between Portfolios
If you have multiple portfolios, use the portfolio selector dropdown in the top navigation bar to switch between them. The selected portfolio determines which data is shown on the dashboard, holdings, and performance pages.
Deleting a Portfolio
- Navigate to the portfolio you want to delete.
- Open Portfolio Settings.
- Scroll to the bottom and click Delete Portfolio.
- Confirm the deletion in the dialog.
Deleting a portfolio permanently removes all its transactions, holdings, snapshots, and tax reports. This action cannot be undone.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| "Portfolio limit reached" | Your current plan limits the number of portfolios. Upgrade your plan to create more. |
| Created with the wrong currency | Currency cannot be changed. Create a new portfolio with the correct currency and use CSV Import to move your transactions. |
| Portfolio not appearing in dropdown | Refresh the page. If still missing, check the Portfolios list page to confirm it was created. |
